The UP World LNG Shipping Index (UPI) is a rules-based stock index family designed to track and measure the performance of publicly traded companies involved in the maritime transport of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Established in 2020, the index currently comprises 20 publicly traded LNG shipping companies listed on exchanges worldwide. These constituents account for over 65% of the global LNG carrier fleet (as of 2020), making UPI the most comprehensive publicly available measure of the LNG shipping sector.

The index employs a transparent, rules-based methodology that combines market capitalisation and fleet capacity to determine constituent weightings. This approach ensures the index accurately reflects each company’s financial scale and operational significance in the global LNG shipping industry.

Global Index Composition

UPI constituents are listed on stock exchanges in nine countries, with the United States accounting for the largest share at 50%, followed by Japan at 15%. This geographic diversification ensures the index captures the truly global nature of the LNG shipping industry.
